how I transitioned from warm formula and breastmilk in a bottle to cold cow’s milk in a cup in 3 weeks!

My Experience

If you’ve read other posts you’ll know that I follow the EASY Method Schedule which is one of the best decisions I made.  However I adapted the feeding schedule to fit my baby’s schedule.  I followed this schedule for ten months and then had to adjust again in order to decrease milk consumption per day and prepare for the upcoming cow’s milk transition.

My baby started full-time daycare the week before she turned one.  Three weeks before I started to prepare her to transition her from her breastmilk and formula feeds to cows milk.  I did this because, 1. baby’s aren’t meant to drink from bottles after one years old 2. why do I want to take bottles, formula and breastmilk everyday to daycare when she shouldn’t be using a bottle anymore and she should be on cows milk anyway.

Prior to me starting the transition below my baby’s milk schedule was as follows:

  • morning bottle of warmed breastmilk 100ml
  • mid-morning snack of warm formula 180ml
  • mid afternoon snack of warmed formula 210ml

In total she was on 490ml/day at ten months (while on my trip in the US I feed her 150ml of formula instead of 100ml of breastmilk from 8-10 months).

How We Transitioned

In order to successfully transition her these are the things I needed to do simultaneously:

  • get her used to cold formula and breastmilk to take cold cows milk
  • decrease 490ml/day further as there is no longer a need for 500-600ml of milk a day after one year, and realistically she wouldn’t be drinking that much cows milk a day
  • prepare her for the taste of cows milk

I started the above three weeks before she was starting daycare – if I would have thought about doing this sooner then I would have given a month to transition instead but it was doable in three weeks.

I started on a Monday and everything that is in BOLD is what I changed from the day or days before.

I’ve tried to give her about 20-30ml in a cup with lunch and dinner and then increased if she wanted more.  Once she transitioned to milk in a cup exclusively she drinks about 50-75ml with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The other important thing to note is that whenever she drank cow’s milk it has always been in a cup sitting up in her highchair so she knew it was something different.  I like the Avent cups and I bought the 12month+ cup in blue and green.  I bought the new cup again to give her another cup to practice with, I didn’t go for the free flowing because I wanted her to master the milk before the drinking part.  I also bought the cup in blue and green because the rest of her cups are red and that way milk only goes into the blue cup.  The color helps her understand what is inside but also helps a lot with cleaning cups.
